July 23 (Thursday) Train to Newbury

Today is mainly a travel day.  We poked around our hotel rooms packing, checked out at 11:00, hung around the lounge and then had lunch at our favorite nearby restaurant, Gourmet Burger Kitchen (or GBK – which we discovered is found all over the city and in other nearby cities).  Of course we all had to have one of the yummy milkshakes.  Then we took the train to Newbury for the next part of our trip.
Our hotel tonight is the Bacon Arm in Newbury, built over 400 years ago as a coaching inn.
Paul and Mary’s room is on the top floor.  To get to the room you have to go through the "fire escape" door.
Entrance to our "suite" of rooms.
The “en suite” bathroom is actually across the hall with the hall functioning as a fire escape.  At least the floors, while very uneven, don’t squeak like those at our London hotel.  I guess I'd be uneven if I were 400 years old.
After settling in we all headed out to see if there was anything to see in Newbury.  The main street (High Street) was a mix of very old and relatively new buildings and the usual lovely old churches...

and little side walkways full of shops.

The main street crossed the Kennett and Avon Canal that we will be boating on during the next few days.

Jim and Phyllis taking pictures of the canal.

We stopped at the “Lock, Stock and Barrel” tavern for drinks and conversation, then headed back to the Bacon Arms for dinner in the pub.
Weather was great and we all agreed that it was another wonderful day.
